Big Knit with Age UK Waltham Forest

Age UK Waltham Forest is calling on nimble-fingered knitters in Waltham Forest to get creative and knit little hats for Age UK and innocent’s Big Knit and help older people keep warm and well in winter.

Now in its 12th year, The Big Knit returns and budding knitters across the UK are being called upon to knit miniature woolly hats to adorn innocent smoothie bottles, which will be sold in stores nationwide from February 2016. For each be-hatted smoothie sold, innocent will donate 25p to help Age UK fund national and local winter projects. Age UK Waltham Forest is calling on local knitters to get as many hats as possible to them by 1st December and needs knitters and those wanting to give it a go to help make this a reality.

Each winter, one older person dies needlessly every eight minutes because of the cold . With over a decade of support from knitters up and down the country, The Big Knit has raised vital funds to support local and national winter projects to help older people keep warm and well in winter. Last year alone, more than 800,000 hats were lovingly created, with designs including a bird cage, fruit, soldiers, peas in a pod, a bee’s nest, a crown and fishermen with their catch.

Emma Tozer Senior Manager at Age UK Waltham Forest said: “The colder months of the year can be really tough for many older people who can face difficulties protecting themselves from the harsh winter weather, getting out and about and staying connected. That’s why it’s so important that local knitters get behind The Big Knit to help raise funds for vital local winter services. We need knitters in Waltham Forest to create lots of miniature hats so we can help older people in the local area by providing Winter Warmth Packs.

Jamie Sterry, innocent drinks, said: “Every year The Big Knit campaign relies on the support of thousands of volunteers up and down the country who knit little woolly hats for us to pop on our smoothie bottles.  We hope that lots of people are inspired to get knitting this year to help us continue to raise money for Age UK and help those who need it most in winter.”
